This is a part of a series where I compile doctrinal verses, and where possible, provide illustrative correlation scripture along with some interpretation.
Theme Verses:
(13) Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
(14) He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
—John 16:13-14 (KJV)
Illustrative Verses
(3) It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
(4) That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
—-Luke 1:3-4 (KJV)
Commentary
Theophilus means “Friend of God”, according to the King James Study Bible. I believe Luke wrote the Gospel of Luke to encourage Theophilus in the Gospel out of love.
More importantly, I also think that he wanted Theophilus to have a record of the Gospel so that he “mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.” This record was maintained and copied for posterity.
One of the fruits of the Holy Spirit is love. Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV) states, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
This passage serves to strengthen my faith that this is the Word of God. I believe the Gospel of Luke was born out of Love for God and fellow man especially Christian brethren.
The Holy Spirit saw fit that this Gospel record was preserved through time providing people with the knowledge of how Jesus came to this world in the flesh and was humiliated and shedded blood for our sins on a cross and rose again on the third day.
Finally, as believers, we should pray that God will send us our own Theophilus (friend of God) or at the very least a potential Theophilus so that we can convey the Gospel to them.
